The research field „Innovation Processes and the Transformation of the Energy System"
The energy sector is traditionally dominated by a few closely related actors (energy suppliers, builders of power stations etc.). The increasing importance of renewable energies in Germany will considerably challenge established structures. While the traditional form of power generation and supply is based on centralized structures with large-scale power plants, the objective of a strongly decentralized form of energy supply is increasingly coming of importance. This requires not only new impulses for existing innovation networks, but also adaptation processes for the relevant actors in the field. These processes need to be supported by new institutions and regulatory mechanisms. The projects in the research field will analyze the processes of transformation and change. At the same time applying an innovative analytical approach based on recent thinking in sociological theory and innovation research. Four projects are assigned to this research field:
